My absence from the last bulletin was for a very good cause - as well as a most enjoyable one.
200 Pharmacists and General Practitioners with partners spent a great week in Vietnam at a Conference organised jointly by the Division where I work and the PSA(Vic).
I might add that our offices are within half a block of each other and the real intent of working together is firmly planted in both camps so it was not too difficult to get motivated about the second such venture of a joint Conference. For many the joint forum was a novelty but for others where a GP and a pharmacist were partners or like me they had participated last year, this was a very natural forum to be in.
Sessions were very ably delivered by GPs, specialists and pharmacists on clinical areas coupled with the pharmacology applicable to the clinical area covered. All were impressed by the calibre of the speakers.
At the conclusion 'hands-on' sessions were held where Care Plans , Case Conferencing and Health Assessments were discussed incorporating the expertise each profession can bring to each patient case for optimising health outcomes.
It was a challenging exercise as each professional involved came to realise the expertise each could offer and work out ways of working together to effect this. Believe me, this is not only new to pharmacists but also to our colleagues the GPs.
Where do we get the time?
Who can help me?
I have oodles of pharmacists around me AND I have a myriad of GPs - who do I work with on medication reviews and when am I going to be able to fit it in when my colleague can meet me?
How do I get paid?
As I said, many challenges.
The good bit is that we can both contribute positively and I am sure that each person came away with a much greater understanding and respect for each other's expertise.
As I said we had a great time, lots of fun and a shared appreciation for the many good things we all imbibed
There is not a lot of difference in the way we all view the world - importantly developing good relationships in the first instance is the key.
Watch this space next year, yes it is fully intended to repeat this.
Perhaps with 400 or more!
