Mr/Ms
Pharmacist..Cntl-Alt-Del
By Neil Johnston
Much
has been written about the spectre of machines replacing pharmacists,
usually about being located in rural, isolated or remote areas where
there is no pharmacy presence.
The reality is that if pharmacists are not prepared to practice in
these locations, then an automated dispensing machine is the best
alternative.
But what about urban areas?
The
Pharmacist/Pharmacy Assistant Relationship
By Jon Aldous
Another
new year is upon us and we look forward to what the future holds for
Pharmacy as a profession.
The relationship between pharmacist and assistant is one which has
evolved over the years and is about to be changed again.
The NSW Health Department has led the way by recognising that pharmacy
technicians are a distinct group from pharmacy assistants with their
own responsibilites and tasks, with a corresponding increase in pay
rates.
The
Changeless Face of Pharmacy
By Mark Coleman
"A new
and changing world" reads the headline in the January Edition of the
Australian Journal of Pharmacy.
It heralds the inaugural "from the president" with Jay Hooper of PSA
National.
The reader would think something was to follow to give an insight
into how changes will occur.
But no, so many times pharmacy leaders say the profession will face
dramatic changes, and then expand with how well the Australian community
is being served by the existing system.
An
imperative safety ( and professional) issue for General Practitioners
and Pharmacists
By Heather Pym
Is
there a case for writing the 'indication' for a prescribed drug on
the prescription? As a Quality Use of Medicine issue there is considerable
evidence to suggest this would be a positive initiative for prescribers,
dispensers and consumers.
Starting
With a Clean Slate
By Rollo Manning
The
following is the first of a series on the role of a pharmacy service
in a primary health care setting. It draws on the experience of the
Tiwi Health Board "Pharmacy Project." being undertaken in the Tiwi
Islands 80 Kms across the ocean from Darwin in the Northern Territory.
The project is twofold - the establishment of a pharmacy service and
evaluating its contribution to health care over a two-year period.
Pharmacy-
A Brave New World?
By Ken Stafford
A
Happy New Year to one and all - or is it?
It is very annoying to me, as a "columnist" contributing to this magazine
when, after spending some time putting my thoughts together for the
impending deadline, a news item starts off a new train of thought.
The
Locum Business is Good!
By Roy Stevenson
The
locum business is good.
Two-thirds of 2002 is booked.
I have taken a booking for the month of January 2003.
This is not a good situation for the pharmacy, or the locum, or the
profession.
I don't like having to plan my life 12 months in advance, and nor
do my client pharmacies.
Rural
Education Headaches
By Simon Rudderham
I
was desperately looking forward to getting out of University life,
and the associated decision making processes that seemed to be bureaucratically
based.
But it appears that for many of the pharmacy graduates, it was a case
of out of the pan and into the fire.
On February 18th, all NSW pharmacy graduates must attend a compulsory
introductory lecture to the pharmacy graduate training course.
Integrating
B2B and B2C E-Commerce Into Basic Operations
By Neil Johnston
Not many
pharmacists have commenced the journey to integrate their basic operations
online.
The investment in the required technology is considerable, and the
time taken to develop a single, apparently simple project, is way
out of proportion to the perceived end result.
When you actually finish the integration of a single function into
some form of centralised control however, the sense of quiet achievement
is immense.
A
Footnote to the Holidays
By
Stephen Rogers
Welcome
back from holidays.
You are tanned from the tropical sun and enthusiasm boiling over for
the year ahead.
The first thing you do is to catch up on your mail.
SUPPLEMENTS
We are introducing the concept
of supplements to give the "look and feel" of a magazine.
To do this we have secured E-Book software to provide a self contained
publication within a publication, in the form of an .exe file.
You can open each book on our website or you can download to your
own desktop. If you choose to download, you should store the .exe
files in a separate library folder. You can also attach the files
to e-mail a colleague. The first of these supplements is the Tiwi
Health Bulletin. Just click on the link and follow the instructions.
The files are virus-free.

Also,
for this edition we have packaged the entire e-magaziner into an E-Book,
which can be downloaded to your desktop similarly for the Tiw iNewsletter
above.
You can view it on site or download to a library folder on your desktop.
Let us know your thoughts on this type of production through the "Contact
Us" link in the menu bar at the top of this page. Please feel
free to e-mail as an attachment to any of your colleagues.

We are
upgrading our employment section.
Not all advertisements have been transferred across from the previous
