    UNDERSTANDING EDLP
    By Neil Johnston

I thought it was an opportune time to look outside pharmacy to try and benchmark specific skill areas in well managed retail businesses, compared to pharmacy.
The retailer I usually like to keep tabs on is Woolworths, because it traditionally has been regarded as having the best retail managerial skills in Australia, and this is reflected in current share prices.
Looking at such an enterprise is a valid exercise, for although there is a trend in pharmacy to concentrate on professional services, many concepts and systems that are developed by Woolworths, can be adapted and transferred to pharmacy, whether it be at the commercial or professional end of the pharmacy scale of activity. ELDP is a concept worth examining.

    A VIEW TO THE FUTURE?
    By Ken Stafford

Every now and then something happens to give me hope that my dream of a pharmacy profession recognised and rewarded for intellectual input is not pie in the sky.
One of these fillips appeared a couple of weeks ago. Twenty or so accredited consultant pharmacists met in Perth to discuss the treatment of arthritic conditions and issues relating to NSAID therapy.
"So what?" you may ask, "Pharmacists meet for CE sessions regularly."
You're correct, but two things made this particular evening important for me.

    THIS SURVEY IS IMPORTANT
    By Rollo Manning

The shortage of pharmacists may be a symptom of poor salaries. The need for money to be earned for professional services is obvious and it is to be hoped the Con Berbatis "Survey of Australia's Community Pharmacies 2002" will be a starting point to value the worth to public health of the many tasks provided "free" by pharmacies around Australia.

    AN OPEN LETTER
    By Simon Rudderham

AN OPEN LETTER TO FINAL YEAR PHARMACY STUDENTS, PRECEPTORS AND THOSE CONSIDERING TAKING ON A GRADUATE.
Final year pharmacy students, the time is almost upon you to decide what area of pharmacy you are about to enter. I am not simply referring to "community" and "hospital". I am also referring to "pharmacy practice model", "information provider" or "just putting the scripts through".
Rest assured, the choice of placement you choose for your graduate year has a bearing on your enjoyment of pharmacy, and the future path which you shall take in your pharmacy career.

    STRATEGIC ALLIANCES
    By Karalyn Huxhagen

Strategic alliances is the one of the 'buzz' phrases of the new PSA president, Jay Hooper.
Jay has spent the last few years trying to form as many alliances and partnerships as possible with Government, industry bodies and related organizations to ensure Pharmacy gains the recognition it deserves when policies are being formulated.
As a Pharmacist manager in a very competitive regional centre I have tried to form my own strategic alliances to try and raise the profile of Pharmacists in the local health care industry.

A TRIBUTE TO A DIVISION OF GENERAL PRACTICE
    By Ayron Teed

The last few editions of this story illustrated the many small events that culminated in this aged pharmacist without any community pharmacy experience purchasing a really remote Victorian pharmacy.
This edition will explain the reasons for the success of the venture.
The purchase of the pharmacy was really a challenge - to change the concept of pharmacy practice in rural areas.

    A PRACTICE CHECKLIST
    By Peter Sayers

With the advent of new professional services being on offer from pharmacy environments, more attention needs to be focused on explaining in detail, and promoting the benefits of these services.
As a pharmacist deeply committed to consultant pharmacy and all of its offshoots, I must say that I am surprised to find very little in the daily suburban or national newspapers, radio, television or magazine media.
    Isn't this a little strange?

ELECTRONIC PUBLICATIONS OVER THE INTERNET FOR PHARMACY
    By Neil Johnston

The following is a copy of a paper delivered to the E-Pharma Conference held in May of this year.
I have decided to publish in i2P in case any pharmacists need some background to establishing their own publications.
The need for Internet and hard-copy publications increases as professional services build as a major income stream.
It is not easy to design, build and maintain a publication on a continuing basis.
    Backup is often needed.
Should any pharmacist require business coaching, or a backup service in any publishing venture, then please contact the editor at neilj@computachem.com.au.
You will find the slide presentation to accompany these notes at this link.

OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WILD WEST OF TEXAS

Having just returned from a month in the US I find myself reflecting on some of the pharmaceutical and medical observations I made while on holidays.
These are very much tempered by just that - on holidays in a relaxed frame of mind you see more, I think than one does on a geared up 'business' reconnoiter.
To start with I got to talk to many folks and be involved in conversations that involved 'health' talk.
It is very different at this level than as a 'professional' - perhaps more honest and the feelings and emotions are more evident, providing a more profound perspective perhaps?

    POSTCARDS FROM THECOALFACE

Editor's Note: Terry has been busy working in a large community pharmacy in the south-west of New South Wales.
We asked if he could give us a snapshot of some of the everyday problems he faced in a rural environment, or had observed during his recent travels.
He obliged with the items that follow, which may have a familiar ring to them.
